His main effect on indigenous people was how he spread Christianity. Aside from this, he was also a notable thief. Many times along his journey he would take goods as well as native wives along with him to be later sold on the black market in Spain. One major event in his voyage was the kidnapping of the Philippine chief's mistress Watollnignwa. this not only caused much upset among the chief, but also many other farmers in the area relying on her good charity to feed their families.

As you may already know, Ferdinand Magellan did not circumnavigate the globe. On the contrary, he died before they reached home. It is rumored that he was killed in the Philippine Islands of the Pacific Ocean. Specifically in Mactan Island in Cebu Province, Philippines. Mactan Island is now called Lapu-Lapu City, after the native who killed Ferdinand Magellan. It's said that Magellan was killed during a war with "Datu Lapulapu." The battle between Datu Lapulapu and Ferdinand Magellan is known as the Battle of Mactan. That may give you an idea of how he related to the native people. I credit this information to whomever answered, "Where did Ferdinand Magellan die?" hope this helped :)

It is difficult to answer this question without knowing if you are referring to Ferdinand Magellan, the explorer whose voyages were sponsored by King Charles I of Spain in the early 1500s; or Charles's predecessor, King Ferdinand II, who along with Queen Isabella, were the patrons of explorer Christopher Columbus in 1492.

But in either case, while the desire to explore new worlds and seek new territories was in itself understandable, the explorations resulted in problems for the native (indigenous) peoples in the New World. King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella were deeply devoted to their Catholic faith, and equally devoted to the belief that it was acceptable to conquer the peoples of other lands. It was expected that explorations to these distant lands would result in greater influence for Spain, and potential converts to Catholicism.

Whether the indigenous people wanted to be colonized, or whether they wanted a new religion was never discussed, nor was it considered. Magellan and Columbus sought to discover new lands, and it was their belief that Spain had the right to conquer the people in those lands, if the people were unwilling to accept Spanish rule.
