I think that when Mansa Musa converted, so did his followers, and then so did the conquered regions of the Mali empire, and then the religoun kept spreading.
It influenced it because they adopted their customs, such as the pilgrimage to mecca, called the Hajj.
When Islam came into Africa, many converted to Islam including the Empire of Ghana. There was a new law passed that everyone had to be Islamic, but not all agreed. (This is also a factor that caused separation in the country.) Islam is a strict religion where you have to follow the rules, unlike Christianity where it is more laid back.
