How did Marco polo's travels help bring about the renaissance?

I'm no expert, but the general idea is that Marco traveled to China and became a favorite of Kublai Khan, traveling and working for him all over China, SE Asia,& India. He documented his journeys and the Chinese way of life. These works became historical documents because of the information concerning life in China under Mongol rule. Also, his detailed accounts became the foundation of some of the first correct maps of Europe and Asia. Polo also inspired future travelers such as Columbus and Vasco de Gama.

In a round about way he did influence the renaissance by bringing items back to Europe from Asia and writing about his time in China describing remarkable animals and things which prompted men to search for a water route to Asia as navigation technology began to improve. People wanted the silks and spices, but the time and cost of the overland Silk Road took months to get back so they had to search for another way. I would add an element of the Crusaders that also brought back new ideas, thinking, foods, and inventions to Europe. As the pressure built for the goods from Asia and the development of the Neoplatonic ideas as opposed to the Catholic Church the foundation of the state and church began to crumble. Another factor that may have influenced the start of the Renaissance was the plague as it decimated Europe. It allowed people to move into positions of power or develop into a new middle class. All of these things together gave fertile ground for the Renaissance.
