Mary was made famous because For attempting to overthrow her father's legacy of returning the Catholic Church to its original polity! In doing this she instituted a pogram that cost the lives of nearly 300 people!

Anciently the magisterium of the Catholic Church was held by the Bishops, through the medium of Councils , both local and Ecumenical ones. These latter, seven of them, are still accepted as an infallible guide by the various Churches claiming to be Catholic .

Henry and the English Church insisted that the Pope had no authority within the Anglican Church , it went against the Catholic Canons. It was this that caused the pope to reject Henry!

What Mary was doing was attempting to reverse this move and ally the English Church with the papal sect that arose from the robber council of Trent!

Mary Tudor, even though her reign had no great advancements for the British pseudo-Empire, was the first Queen of England in her own right, which makes her important.

Her executions of heretics (Protestants) also implanted a hatred of Catholicism in England for many years and made most people even more dedicated to the reformed faith rather than returning to Catholicism as Mary had envisioned.

Not so much her catholocism. This was widely known before she became queen and she still received popular support against the Protestant Coup intended to put Jane Grey on the throne.

The worst thing she did was marrying Philips II. The English were weary of foreign influence anyway, but she gave the Spaniards too much influence. This marriage also caused England to be dragged into a war with France, which made England lose Calais.

The prosecutions of protestants made her extremely unpopular. Those burned were seen as martyrs and this only fueled their cause.
