The difference between the power and possessions of the super-rich, and the ordinary citizens, grew so big that the ordinary people lost their influence over who rules them. A series of dictators subverted the constitution. There were civil wars between the Big Men.
Julius Caesar and his friends decided that the Republic was dead and he tried to create a kingship (without the actual title). His adopted son then implemented the plan and the ordinary people lost all control of the institutions of state.

Augustus, being one of the most politically astute men in history, used the mechanisms of the Republic to consolidate the power in himself. Thus, the change from Republic to Principate was for the most part a smooth transition. This was aided by the fact that the Romans were sick and tired of the civil wars and that Augustus had a long reign so the idea of the Principate could be firmly established.
