When Peter left the Apostles (see the Acts of the Apostles book of the New Testament) he went to Rome. Rome, being the center of commerce in Peter's age was the place he chose to found the Church. At first, he only had a few followers but they worked tirelessly to tend to the poor and needy in the city and in the region. They attracted many people this way because the Roman pantheon of gods tended to think very little of the common man whereas Jesus's teachings were more direct and with the people. Consequently, over time (it took hundreds of years) enough converts caused the Eastern Roman Empire to recognize and then establish Christianity (Catholicism) as the central faith. This happened largely due to Constantine I, the first Emperor who was fully Christian. Once he came to power and conquered the Western Empire, he made it the religion of the land. Thus, the Romans at that point all had become Roman Catholics.

This is the year Constantine conquered Rome and when he did, he made Christianity the official religion of the state. Technically, by law, all Romans were supposed to be Catholic at that time.
