Roman imperial expansion was due to military success. Rome won a large number of wars which occurred at different times and for different reasons. As a result, Rome took over all the lands around the Mediterranean. This was not due to Rome having a grand design of conquest. It was the result of these victories and Rome found itself poorly equipped to deal with having an empire. This led to the fall of the Roman republic. Much of Rome's imperial expansion occurred during the period of the Republic. The Republic was followed by the period of rule by emperors in which the emperor was an absolute ruler. Rome was by far the most powerful state west of the Persian Empire. There was further imperial expansion. Augustus conquered the Alpine region because he was it as a buffer which could protect Italy from attacks He had eastern Austria taken over due to rebellions. Claudius ordered the conquest the south of England to strengthen his political position in Rome. Vespasian ordered the conquest of the north of England due to troubles with the dominant tribe in the area. Trajan conquered Dacia (in present day Romania) because the Dacians continually raided the empire. After this there was not any further expansion.
