Much of South Australia's goods were transported via the Murray River in 1901. Paddlesteamers were common up and down the Murray River, which provided an easy route from Victoria (and New South Wales) to the sea port at Victor Harbor.

Horse and cart (drays and sulkies) were common also. Many goods were still being taken from the sea ports to other ports such as Melbourne and Sydney by large ships.
