Because they couldn't make money off of the slave trade the same as southerners. Most farm land need to grow things like cotton and tobacco are grown in warm climates.

added- As the North became more industrialized and the situation of slavery that was a cause of disputes within the Federal government became a talking point among people in the North, many people came to believe that slavery was immoral.
