Unless one wishes to consider being a "non" communist, free republic country, such as The Republic of South Vietnam (1955-1975) was; Nationalism. Nationalism had no influence on the war. The war was a simple case of one country trying to take over another one. And the aggressive country happened to be a communist nation.
