After the outbreak of the Civil War, William Loundes Yancey (1814-1863) headed a Confederate diplomatic delegation to Europe, whose task was to get the formal recognition of the Independence of the South by the European Powers. The mission was unsuccessful and after his return in America in 1862, Yancey was elected a member of the Senate of the Confederate States of America.
