Many Indian's became heroes during WWII because of the Navajo "code talkers" who were a great benefit to the military. Nobody outside of the tribes could speak Navajo and as a result the Allies had an umbreakable method of communication. When the Code Talkers returned, they were heroes as were any other Native American soldiers. Probably the war delayed independence for India. Due to the brillant political manuevering by Ghandi, the British were planning to leave their richest colony in the 1940's. The war put a stop to independence plans. Meanwhile the British imperial government was highly stressed that even a minor Japanese encroachment into India could trigger massive unrest. The loss of India during the war, especially by popular uprising, would be a massive blow to the British war effort. Basically the British were fighting to maintain the status quo - ie, their empire, colonial policies, and various perogatives around the globe. They also saw themselves as champions of liberty against the evil Germans and Japanese. Had India risen up in revolt that would have put the lie to their political position and forced the British the take a long look at their imperial ambitions. As it was, the Japanese penetrated quite easily into Burma (the eastern part of the greater Indian colony) but there ran out their logistics. The war drug on for some time until the British were able to penetrate the tenuous logistical string of the Japanese and cause a wholesale collapse of Japanese military capabilities. Thus, the war ended and the British were again confronted with Ghandian policies. India was granted independence. Quickly, the nation degenerated into chaos eventually splitting into five major nations (Pakistan, India, Ceylon, Burma, Bangladesh)and several small ones (Bhutan/Nepal/Kashmire). The various borders were rather vague having little historical consequence. This shortly led to a border war with China and on going conflicts between Pakistan and India. It is interesting to note that the Indian subcontinent had not been self ruled for many centuries until 1947. The Mongols had ruled for about eight hundred years before their rule weakened. They were gradually replaced by Portugese, French, and English in the 1800s. Ultimately the English took over the entire area, ruling for about eighty years.
