Much of its industry and infrastructure was very badly damaged. It lost its independence, first to Germany and the Soviet Union and towards the end of WW2 it became a Soviet satellite. The Nazis tried to liquidate its intellectuals and the Soviet Union murdered many of its army officers. In all, Poland lost about 6 million dead in WW2, of whom about half were Jews. Poland regained its independence at the end of the 1980s.

During World War II, Poland's role in the Holocaust was primarily as a 'venue' or 'setting.' Having been conquered by the Nazis in 1939, Poland disappeared as an independent nation for the duration of the war. Within its pre-war borders, however, the Nazis established many of the 'death-camps' that were used to incarcerate and then exterminate large numbers of Jews and other supposed enemies of Nazi Germany.

Indeed it would be more correct to describe Poland as a victim than having a role. The Nazis even changed the town names to their German forms.

On September 1, 1939, Germany invaded Poland. Poland fought in World War II from the very beginning until the very end. On May 8, 1945, the Soviet and Polish armies conquered Berlin and won the war. Poland fought in the Battle of Britain, the Battle of Monte Cassino and fought for the freedom of not only Poland, but all countries.

Poland came under Nazi control in 1939. When the Germans moved in they began the process of turning Poland into a slave state. Poland had one of the largest Jewish populations in Europe so they began the process of identification and removal. They would go into villages and kill the entire village. As they took over they closed schools and killed the teachers, closed off Jewish areas of the large cities and made them ghettos. From these they will finally load trucks up with whole sections of the ghetto, put the people in cattle cars, and carry them to the camps/ gas chambers. Some of the Polish people did try to help the people in the Jewish ghetto, but the Nazi were not beyond killing anyone who was against them or who helped the Jews. They considered themselves better than the Polish and did plan on making everyone a slave when they won the war.
