It began with the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinard of Austria by members of a Bosnian gang allegedly associated with Serbia. Therefore, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. Serbia had an alliance with Russia so Russia declared war on Austria-Hungary, and Germany had an alliance with Austria-Hungary so Germany declared war on Russia and France, which also had an alliance with Russia. German forces had to march through Belgium to get to France so Britain declared war on Germany as they had an alliance with Belgium.
