When more and more people started following Mohammed, they were kicked out of Mecca because the leaders were fearing that he would become too powerful. They went to medina on a trip called the hijra in 622. After a few years later the Meccans started a war with the Muslims that took 3 years. Eventualy the Muslim won Mecca in 630 and could think about expanding. In just 50 years after Mohammed died in 632 the Islamic empire expanded to the entire Middle East, northern Africa and Persia.
Only theories speculate since no record of how it began officially exist. The going theory, however, is that there was a spike in agricultural activity in the Middle East. Since hunting and gathering take so much time, not much was left to innovation. Farming led to less time hunting and more time in thought which in turn led to better farming techniques. Humans would gather to these places of farming, and it would lead to industry. Soon hunting became all but obsolete, and these gatherings of people would be what we call today, civilization.
