Americans were effected by communism. At this time there was something called the Blacklist, where they would put the names of famous people that where believed to be communist or spys for the Russians. At this time Americans also feared bombing. They would have weekly bomb drills where they would duck and cover. Also with all of the disagremments between the USA and the USSR, they where afraid that nuclear war would break out.

According to the United States Manual on Citizenship Training (1927-1932), quoting Karl Marx's Communist Manifesto; each of which simply refine the definition of Plato's definition. The United States of America converted to a Democracy (A Democracy is the preferred form of government for a communistic enterprise, quoted) under the administration of Franklin Roosevelt in the mid 1930's.

During the McCarthy era the move was not against "Communism" (in its original definition) but was instead a move against "Socialism" by the "capitalists" in society. Of course the original definitions for each of these terms: Communism, Socialism, Capitalism which had remained unchanged for 2,000 years took on new meanings that are still in use today. So the overall effect would be the ability of the government to redefine formerly well grounded terms and definitions to new standards of things they never meant before, or Propaganda.
