By striking a compromise about the representation in Congress--APEX By creating two houses in the legislature--APEX By making representation in the House of Representatives proportionate to population and representation in the Senate equal for each state
A great number of compromises had to be struck in order to get the Constitution ratified. Among these was the Electoral Process whereby small states and large states could receive equal representation in a Federal system. Rhode Island (The smallest state in the Union) actually receives the same basic powers as California (The most populous state in the Union) and Alaska (the largest state in the Union)
By allowing equal representation for all of the states or colonies as they were known at the time, it did not matter what size the states were as they would receive equal voting power on a federal level.
They made them all have 2 Senators so that they would all have the same amount of power.

The delegates to the Constitutional Convention believed that the flaws in the Articles of Confederation were two numerous and two deep to be remedied by making superficial changes to the document. The biggest issue in the delegates' opinion was the weakness of the federal government under the Articles of Confederation. As a result, in the US Constitution of 1789, the federal government has many more expanded powers.

The delegates to the Constitutional Convention of 1787 accomplished a great deal during the first days of the event. First of all, George Washington was unanimously voted in as the first President of the United States. Next they developed a framework for the separation of government powers that resulted in the executive, legislative and judicial branches.
Two things happened: 1. The Articles of the Confederation were abolished 2. The delegates drafted the Constitution we have today
