But Montezuma had his doubts about them. a while after they arrived, the Aztecs discovered that the Spanish were as mortal as their other enemies, and fought against them. They captured some Spaniards, and sacrificed or even ate them

In April 1520, Velázquez sent an expedition to capture Cortés. As Cortés left to fight the expedition, an Aztec revolt began in Tenochtitlan. Cortés returned and obliged Montezuma to face the crowd, but the Aztec leader was struck by a stone and died. The Spanish were driven out of the city, incurring heavy losses.
