Overall the completion of the transcontinental railroad had a positive affect on most Americans. They realized the difficulties involved and its completion was a symbol of an upcoming successful future. It also affected how the US government became more of a facilitator to the national economy. Part of this was due to the generous land grants given to the railroad industry. Americans considered it a marvel, it was built through difficult terrain, and finished ahead of schedule, and it employed over 20,000 mostly immigrant workers. It also had a serious affect on Native Tribes. The Tribes had to be displaced and for Americans it saved the Indians, in their way of thinking. The governments view was now the Natives could make way for a superior civilization and to develop the west to its fullest potential. By 1877, the last of the plains tribes were entering reservations.

There are several other things that the completion of the railroad accomplished, in addition to what my colleague noted. There has always been a link between transportation and communication: the completion of the transcontinental railroad was a godsend for newspapers and magazines, making it possible to send and receive information much more quickly and reliably. The telegraph was certainly useful for reporters, but most people did not know Morse Code. Now, people could get their favorite daily (or weekly) publications at the news-stand, and even getting them by mail could occur more quickly, as the postal service often shipped large numbers of print publications by train.

Another benefit involved the traveling public: as railroad travel became easier and faster, more people were able to travel over long distances, to see relatives or conduct business or just go sight-seeing. Train travel was more convenient and safer than previously available methods like stagecoaches, which were often reliable in the short run, but could also be dusty and uncomfortable, and sometimes subjected to attacks by bandits. Some trains soon created elegant cars for upper-class men and women or business travelers. (Unfortunately, it also didn't take long for the railroad to be segregated, giving white people an easier way to travel than black people. But the railroads would also offer jobs to black people, as porters and attendants; this became one of the few reliable and good-paying occupations available to minority workers of that time.)
