Some sources, such as http://etext.lib.Virginia.edu/etcbin/jamestown-browse?id=J1023 suggest that when the Europeans first settled in Jamestown, the relationship they had with the Powhatan Indians was very peaceful. The Indians helped them to settle by offering food such as Indian cakes and corn.
Other sites, such as http:/en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Powhatan#History suggest that the violence started right away.
Either way, there was violent interactions between the European settlers and the Powhatan Indians that led to mass murdering of both sides. Personally I would be more likely to believe the first link because it's a letter from Edward Maria Wingfield who was one of the very first to settle in Jamestown.
The interactions and conflict affected both the English and Indians and resulted in disease, war and cultural assimilation. Neither group was prepared to physically deal with the diseases of the other, war resulted from the aggression of the English and ultimately cultural assimilation occurred on both sides diluting each culture.

There were many different reasons why there was conflict between the settlers and the government. First of all, and probably the most vital reason, was that both
The French had better relations with indigenous peoples in North America than English settlers because they were more focused on establishing trade alliances rather than displacing or subjugating them. The French often integrated with indigenous communities through intermarriage and the fur trade, whereas the English sought to expand their territories and push Native Americans off their land. This difference in approach led to more positive interactions between the French and indigenous groups.
