Confederate President Davis ignored the general consensus on sending troops to reinforce Vicksburg. General Lee convinced Davis that sending Southern troops from Virginia was not a good idea. Eager to avoid a Propaganda victory for the Union, Davis asked General Braxton Bragg to send reinforcements to Johnston's forces.
He ordered Beauregard to fire on it - the first shots of the Civil War.

The intention of resupplying Fort Sumter was confidencially brought to the attention of South Carolina's Governor Pickens by a messenger of Lincoln administration. The letter pointed out that only supplies would have been brought to the garrison. If no armed opposition would be made, no attempt to introduce into the fort reinforcements, arms and munitions would be carried on, without informing the Governor.

demand the surrender of the fort, which, delivered to Major Anderson in the late afternoon of 11th, was rejected in the early morning of the 12th.
Thus, the bombardment of the fort begun at about 4 a.m.
