If US President Franklin D. Roosevelt had his way, there would never have been a second world war. Most people, world wide, had the same beliefs and another major war after the WW 1 disaster few people wanted except the leaders of fascist and other despotic nations.Yet Roosevelt and other Americans could see that totalitarian states were a real threat to world peace. Japan already was raping China, Hitler ruled with an iron hand, the USSR, Italy and even Spain were all undemocratic nations.
Roosevelt was sympathetic to the two major free nations of France and the UK, however, the WW 1 scenario was almost identical. There was a strong anti-war element in the US. All FDR could do was use diplomacy to show the world that it was not in favor of dictators in Moscow, Berlin, Rome and Tokyo. When the despotic states even bothered to reply to FDR, they reminded him and the American people that the two major democracy's, France and England, ruled countless millions of peoples in their colonial empires. This could not be denied, nor could the appeasement policies of France and England with regards to Hitler.
