The US acquired the rights to the Panama Canal Zone in 1903 by supporting the independence movement that split Panama from Colombia.

When Colombia would not ratify a proposed treaty, US warships blocked the resupply of Colombian troops fighting the separatists. Panama declared independence on November 3, 1903 and three days later the US negotiated the right to build and control the Canal, which was finally completed in 1914. The treaty, which was signed by a French representative on behalf of Panama, also bought out the French company that had failed in its attempts to build a canal.

The Isthmus of Panama was originally part of Colombia. When negotiations for purchase of the land from Colombia failed, the US created a revolution of the Panamanians, which resulted in a quick US recognition of the new Panama. Panama then granted, thru treaty, a ten mile wide strip of land across the isthmus for construction of the Canal.

President Roosevelt himself didn't build the Panama Canal...

Anyway, it was built using Cranes and Trains (olden version of backhoes and dumptrucks), as well as explosives and hard manual labor.

If you are wondering how it suddenly appeared while he was in office- The people in panama were in control of this large piece of land that Roosevelt wanted to use for a canal so trade would be easier and they wouldn't have to go through The Straits Of Magellan (The tip of south America that was said to be filled with blood thirsty cannibals and dangerous whirl winds around strange and scary places called Desolation point, Broken bay etc.). Unfortunately the Panama people weren't going to give it away- even when given 40 million dollars and we had to take it by force. A rebellion started with the engineers but when they were given 10 million dollars they were as pleased and punch and they finished the canal.
