Forced labor emerged in the American colonies to meet the shortage of labor that resulted when settlers sought commercial exploitation of agricultural staples in areas of low population. Although 20 Africans were sold to settlers in Virginia as early as 1619 most of the 17th century white indentured servants were far more numerous in the English mainland colonies than slaves. Only after 1680 when the flow of indentured servants of Europe grew less did slavery gain a foothold. In the years following the revolution slavery became the south's "peculiar institution" while between 1774 and 1804 the northern states began to abolish slavery. In some states it was immediate, but more often it was gradual freeing slaves born after the passage of the state's emancipation act when they reached a given age ( usually in their 20's). The spread of the production of cotton and the invention of the cotton gin in 1793 increased the demand for slave labor and made possible the start of a vast new slave empire as southerners moved west. At the start of the revolution there were about half a million slaves in the north and south, but on the eve of the civil war there was almost 4 million slaves in the south.
Southern slavery was diverse and depended on the crops, location, and the size of the slave holdings. Slavery was enormously profitable. Cotton exports had 50-60% of the value of the nation's total exports. This helped pay for exports from abroad and the slave trade provided the raw material for New England's textile mills because slave produced crops required many middlemen to sell and take them to markets as well as finance/supply the slave owning planters.

The certain Brazil was the last country in the Americas to abolish slavery. It would appear that documentation is required to establish a fact that the United States was the first nation in the Americas to adopt slavery. With that said, it's clear that before the United States was an independent country, slavery existed in the Americas where the British, French and Spanish ruled colonies and territories.
