On the Union side, there was still a racial divide, with white officers commanding all-black regiments.

On the Confederate side, although there was discussion about arming willing slaves, the risk of rebellion was deemed too great. When facing ex-slaves fighting for the Union, Confederates (even high-ranking officers) were overwhelmingly incensed or hateful, since they had been raised in a society where blacks were considered inferiors.
