Mexico encouraged foreign settlement in Texas, but then Americans far outnumbered Mexicans in Texas. The Americans started to want to be independent, so they started the Texas Revolution. The Alamo was the first battle. Although all the Americans were killed, the Mexicans, in proportion, had many more losses. After that, the U.S. sent aid to the Texan army, which then routed the Mexicans at San Antonio and San Juanito (I think). Texas became a U.S. state 9 years later, in 1845.
