In America's early years, most people lived east of the Mississippi River and had no plans for relocating. These folks were doing ok financially and the West to them was a wild and unknown place. Later on as American society progressed, many people sought wealth by the prospect of finding gold or silver and wanted to travel west to enrich themselves. Others, wanted to take advantage of the governments Home Stead Laws and the prospect of starting a new life on free land, providing they met government regulations, made them want to be pioneers in the US West.
