The Black Death was prevalent in nearly all of Europe, the Near East, and Northern Africa. A great number of people died. It disrupted trade, weakened governments, and caused severe economic decline in most places. In some parts of Northern Italy, more than three quarters of the people died, and the rest were either too sick to do anything or spent their time tending the sick and burying the dead.

There are some historians who attribute the decline of feudalism and end of serfdom in Western Europe largely to the Black Death. According to this view, the reduction in manpower put nobles into a position of having to compete with each other for serfs to tend their land, tempting the serfs of other nobles away and freeing them in the process.

The Black Death also caused people to question the teachings of the Church, as people wondered how a merciful God could allow such a thing to happen. There was a reduction of power in the Catholic Church and it may be no coincidence that the beginnings of Protestantism can be traced to this period.

There were many local cultural problems associated with the Black Death, including persecution and massacre of various groups of people, including Jews, Roma, Friars, beggars, pilgrims, lepers, and women. The logic for such persecutions is almost incomprehensible. There were large groups of flagellants in some parts of Europe, and these people went about in processions whipping themselves. All these things happened because people were presented with an inexplicable horror, and had no idea how to deal with it.
