Christianity brought political and social unity to Western Europe because Europeans had a common social values which they could relate to. The Roman Catholic Church also arranged and positioned themselves to replace the old Roman Empire. Western Europeans during the decline of Rome all wanted to be apart of the Roman Empire or at least the idea of it. As a result, when Europe became Christianized, Europeans were all unified under one religion which was central controlled by the pope.

Catholic AnswerUp until the protestant revolt in the sixteenth century, all of Europe, save a small contingent of Jews, was Catholic. From the conversion of Charlemagne in 800 A.D. until the beginning of the 14th century, the Church was in a golden age, and Europe, its rulers, and its people were all united with a common Christian outlook. They realized very well, that we are only on this earth for a very short time compared to eternity, and they made the best of it. The monasteries of St. Benedict flourished all over Europe bringing civilization, culture, education, etc. to everyone. The Church was people's lives.Doctrine in the early Christian church helped unify the people by helping them to understand the differences between Judaism and the new form of Christianity - Roman Catholic.
The Church was an organization that existed in practically all of medieval Europe. It had its own rules, which it could impose on the governments of countries, and though it did not do this often, it did have the effect of producing a certain level of uniformity in how kings and other leaders dealt with their people. The Church provided much of the education of the Middle Ages, and what it did not provide usually conformed to the Church's practices. In Western Europe, Latin was the language of this education, and so there was a single language nearly all well educated people used over Western Europe. In Eastern Europe, Greek was used, but the Eastern Churches tended to use the vernacular more. Pilgrimage and crusades sometimes threw people of different countries together.
