What eventually became the European Union started as the European Economic Community in 1957. It had 6 countries as members. In 1992, the then 12 members signed a treaty that brought about the European Union. It officially came into existence in November 1993. Since then, 16 more countries have joined, bringing the total to 28 members, with others interested in joining.

Rev. 13:1-2 &
Rev 17:12-13

The same year Israel returned to the land a group known as the "Club of Rome" signed what was called the "Treaty of Rome" creating the European Union that plans to divide the world into ten regions. The Pope has called the EU the "Revived Roman Empire." Signers of the treaty were quoted as saying: "We felt like real Romans that day....purposely recreating the Roman Empire."

After the Suez-Canal crisis in 1956, France began to ponder a free trade block in Europe to help the European countries recover after WW2 and also to ensure that nothing like it ever happened again.

It's initial ideal partner was the UK, but the UK had sunk into nationalism and a state of mind that they didn't need to concern themselves with the rest of Europe. So the plan went ahead with Western Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands instead.

Since then, many other countries have joined and it has become more of a Union than just an agreement.

The UK did eventually want to join in 1965, but was vetoed by the French that saw them as untrustworthy and not committed, eventually the British joined in 1974.

Interestingly enough a British Prime Minister was the first to suggest something like the EU in the late 1940s, but his ideas were shot down by the other countries.
