North and South disagreed anyway about extending slavery into the West. The Missouri Compromise (1820)drew a line in the sand - anywhere North of that line, slavery would be illegal. It kept the peace for thirty years.
It was a sensible deal thatresolved their disagreement.
Slavery would simply be illegal North of a certain parallel. But it only applied to the territories acquired from France in the Louisiana Purchase (1803).
When more new territories were acquired from Mexico, a new Compromise had to be worked out. This one didn't last.

An advantage to the Missouri Compromise of 1820 was that slavery would not be permitted in the territory that is now the state of Missouri. A disadvantage to the Missouri Compromise was that people who believed in slavery in the South could not move north to gain more land and keep their slaves.
