Portuguese imperial ambitions in the New World were different than those of its rivals, such as Spain and France.

While many Spanish explorers were sent to search for the Cities of Gold, the Fountain of Youth, and other legends, Portuguese colonial tactics were focused on opening ports and maintaining trade lanes. As such, Portugal were looking to generate wealth by trading and exploiting Natural Resources in the New World, while its competitors sought to find and conquer such wealth from the Native Americans. The Portuguese were able to find this in its establishment of colonies in Brazil, with gold and silver pouring back into Lisbon shortly after.

Back home in Europe though, Portugal was a generally minor player in international affairs, due to its relatively small size and being bordered by a larger neighbor. By turning to the New World, the Portuguese was able to expand on its power and influence without having to run the risk of being in direct conflict with Spain.
