Texas had fought a war with Mexico and won. They declared Texas to be an independent country. Texas later applied to become part of the United States. At first the United States said no because they knew Mexico would protest. But a wave of feelings called "Manifest Destiny" made Americans feel that American would get better if it grew bigger. James Knox Polk campaigned to make Texas part of the United States but it was done before Polk became president. Mexico did protest and the United States invaded Mexico. In addition to Texas, America took land for Arizona, California, and Nex Mexico.

Initially, there was not allot of support for the annexation of Texas, the financial crisis of 1837 had many Americans focused on internal problems. When President Tyler appointed John C. Calhoun as the Secretary of State, however, there was a change. Calhoun saw Texas as a new slave state, and its annexation to him seemed a logical way to end foreign competition for the Texas territory. The British, for example, were interested in Texas.Calhoun drafted an annexation treaty and presented it to the US Senate. President Tyler saw the Senate agreement on the treaty as a mandate and in the last few days of his administration, Tyler signed the annexation agreement and in 1845, Texas was the 28th US state.
