The United States Continental Congress declared independance from England's king, and all the signatories finalized the document on July 4, 1776.

The British sent troops and ships to start the rebellion. At that time, the British were probably the toughest military around, with the toughest navy in the world. The native American population (Indians) sided with Britain.

The Prussians sent advisors to assist the Continental Army only after they were convinced that the colonies could withstand the beating that the British would give. The French joined the colonies' cause after the Battle of Saratoga, and the Dutch and Spanish both independantly declared war on Britain within two years of that date.

The war was not world wide, but did encompass a wide swath of the North Atlantic.

Eventually the British gave up at Yorktown, leaving the Indians alone to confront a now very angry group of Americans and all of Europe happy at Britain's loss.
