As Abe Lincoln was one of the main driving forces behind the rebuilding of the nation, his death placed a huge burden on the American people, but did not halt our reconstruction. His plans for rebuilding were far more moderate than the Radical Republicans wanted to impose on the South. His death cleared the way for them to impose harsh conditions on the South.
