Napoleon itself had an immense prestige among the troops. He was in command of the French troops "guarding" the Directory on the day of the coup. After the dismissal of the directory, and the exclusion of opposing members of the congress, Napoleon is named as the head of the three-members "consulate". His prestige, the idea that he would restore order and moral order, and end a too troubled period, gave him a great support among the general public.
