The cultivation of cattle in the United States ensured that once the slaves were freed, there was still money to be made. Cattle was big business in the southwest with herds being driven to meet railways for transport to Chicago or Kansas City. Railways expanded to allow more cattle to make the trip. Cattle ensured there was lots of money during the late 1800's.
