With the expansion of the western territories, the concept of the term â??westâ?? became much broader between 1800-1860. Following the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, the Texas annexation in 1845, the Oregon country, the Mexican cessation and the Gadsden Purchase, the boundaries seemed endless.
It was from the years 1800-1860. That was when American Romanticism happened.
St. Louis used to be the west because nobody lived any further west. As people moved farther and farther, the definition of west moved with them. Especially with the California gold rush in 1849, since that's about as far west as anybody could go.
