In WWII, there was a rationing of just about everything. We had ration cards for each member of the family. Each was alloted so much sugar, gasoline, shoes........you name it. I was a little girl, but I remember collecting newspaper, metal objects, aluminum foil, string, and other things. Almost everything was needed for use in making war items for the fighting men and women. We had to be very careful of what we used. If our shoes got holes in the bottoms, we put "half-soles" on them.
We had to limit our traveling, because we could run out of gasoline stamps. Even butter and margarine were rationed. Hope this helps.

The shortages in World War 2 were cigarettes, flour, sugar, and chocolate. Also most other things needed for daily life, for instance meat, paper for newspapers, clothing. It also depended on the country you were in, for instance, Australia had plenty of most thuings, unlike Britain.

In both the United States and the United Kingdom they did surprisingly well. The people got very creative with managing with less or getting items from other places. The farmers faired better. Many gave up driving with the gas rationing. In Belgium King Leopold had to get Germany to increase the rations for the Belgians. A black market did develop but the governments did little about the black markets. Sadly, the Britons had to stay on rationing until 1955. As things improved less and less items were rationed.
