A:Hard to say. The serpent's forked tongue should rule out speech. The serpent's miniscule brain should rule out meaningful speech. The lack of vocal chords and a suitable soundbox should rule out speech period.

Perhaps the answer is provided by Leon R. Kass (The Beginning of Wisdom: Reading Genesis), who says that the Garden of Eden is a purely mythic place, and the story of Adam and Eve should not be regarded as literally true. Perhaps the answer lies in the fact that serpents were a common motif in ancient Near Eastern religions, so why not Judaism?

Answer:

Jesus reveals to us that the "serpent" was and is "a cherub" [angel] called Satan:

"...the great Dragon... that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world..." (Rev.12:9).

"...he laid hold on the Dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan..." (Rev.20:2).

Throughout The Bible... angels are revealed to "speak."

In Ezekiel's "lament" upon the king of Tyrus... he refers to him as "the anointed cherub that covereth" [Ezek.28:14]. A cherub [kar-oob] is one type of God's angels that Ezekiel describes from his vision:

"Each of the cherubim had four faces: One face was that of a cherub [ox], the second the face of a man, the third the face of a lion, and the fouth the face of an eagle." (Ezek.10:14 NIV)

"These were the living creatures I had seen beneath the God of Israel by the Kebar River, and I realized that they were the cherubim [plural of cherub]. Each had four faces and four wings, and under their wings was what looked like the hands of a man. Their faces had the same appearance as those I had seen by the Kebar River. Each one went straight ahead. (verses 20-22)

Was this what Adam and Eve saw... or did Satan speak to them through "that old serpent" as Balaam was addressed by God through the donkey [Num.22:28]?

It could have gone either way, since the Bible [God's Truth - John 17:17] speaks of talking serpents and asses; plus, we have no problem recognizing "dragons" today as being "serpentine" in appearance.

In any event... Jesus tells us that it wasn't a literal "snake" [as we think of it today] to whom Eve spoke, and was spoken to... but "...that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world...".

Satan does talk.

"...the Lord said unto Satan... Then Satan answered the Lord..." (Job 1:7).

"...the Devil taketh Him up into an exceeding high mountain... and saith unto Him..." (Matt.4:8-9).

"...the Devil said unto Him... And Jesus answered him..." (Luke 4:3-4).

Which creature represented the devil in the Garden of Eden?

A:Many Christians regard the talking serpent as representing the devil; after all real snakes can not talk. However, the serpent was a widely recognised motif in ancient Near Eastern religions, unrelated to any concept of devil. Similarly, Jews do not regard the snake as personifying the devil. There is no scriptural support for the Christian position.

What was another name for Adam and Eve story?

The biblical story of Adam and Eve is actually composed of a number of stories together, and it is uncertain whether the original author really intended to talk about the same man, since Adam really just means man, or human. The first story in the sequence is called the second creation account. This is followed by the story of the Garden of Eden and then the story of Cain and Abel.

Do the devil talk to any one in the bible?

Yes. The obvious reference is Jesus'own temptations in the wilderness where Satan tempts Jesus three times. There are other references, such as the devil talking through those suffering from demonic possession, but the case where 'Satan' talks to Adam and Eve in the garden in the guise of a serpent is not necessarily an example, as nowhere in Genesis does it say that the serent either is, or represents, the devil.

How did the serpent know to deceive Eve?

A:Like the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, the serpent was a common motif in many ancient Near Eastern religions. It demonstrates the fear and awe felt for snakes, and could be considered a hangover from earlier animist beliefs. The snake is portrayed as wiser than Adam and Eve, but there is no suggestion that this was because it received any help from a supernatural spirit or Satan, or that it was a representation of any evil spirit.

How did Satan get in the Garden of Eden?

A:At no point in the story of the Garden of Eden (Genesis chapter 3) does it ever say that Satan was present in the Garden. In fact, God is said to punish snakes, or serpents, for taking part in the temptation of Eve, causing all snakes to crawl on their bellies (Genesis 3:14). Assuming for a moment that the story is historically true, this is not the action of a just God who would have realised that the guilty party was really Satan in disguise if this had been the case. It is only is more recent times that some religious leaders have placed Satan in this role, aware that snakes could never really talk.
