J. Frank Dobie (1888-1964) was not widely known as a accomplished Texas author and folklorist when he first published his Guide to Life and Literature of the Southwest in 1943. That was soon to change!
Dobie was the first to point out, outside of the Southwest, there is "fragmentary, incomplete, and in no sense a accurate bibliography" of Southwestern culture. Furthermore, he failed to factor in oil and the capitalism factor.
I do know when my family purchase property in Texas, because it was dirt cheap, they thought of it as an asset that would have great value for America's need for oil. Furthermore, they imagined it might remove the Kaufman/Sommer, "white trash" stigma. However, oil companies would never tell property owners that they never intended to drill for oil, because they could make more money, by "middling".
Middling is an adjective for buying oil, outside the United States, and refining at huge profits. The price they pay is immaterial. They make their profits by refining and then selling it at huge profits to the American people. Meanwhile, their mineral assets become more and more valuable.
Because the issues are complicated and extensive, I will be brief. The hidden agenda here is, oil companies bought mineral rights, from naïve property owners with promises of huge profits and then never pumped oil. On the surface that sounds silly. But, here is the secret. Then oil sold for three dollars a barrel. Now, oil sells for $100 a barrel. Downside, zero. Upside, a sweet $95 a barrel in extra profits.
The people of the Southwest should strive to learn more of the land to which they belong, to make their past more alive, to bring them to a realization of the values of their own cultural inheritance, and to stimulate them to observe. They should practice and train to critically read, and strive to understand, what is hidden agenda.
It is odd that no book of national reputation comes off the presses about any of these aspect of oil. I deeply feel there is hidden agenda in every aspect of American life. Agenda which will not be revealed by the powerful, or stated too complicated, for "John Q. Public" to understand!
