D-day was on June 6, 1944. The U.S, British, and other allied nations in the Atlantic (yes the US was in the Pacific too but that's a different story) gathered all available ships to 5 beaches off the coast of Normandy. They were codenamed Omaha, Utah, Juno, Gold, and Sword. The 1st part of the operation was a continuous barrage of artillery and air. the US had specially designed rocket boats. this boat looked much like an oil rig except the deck was loaded with rocket launchers. this boat was capable of destroying barbed wire. There were German pillboxes (fortifications of concrete. these pillboxes were so thick that a navy shell only hoped to penetrate the walls. it could take a direct hit from a bomb and still stand with little damage. these allowed Nazis to fire from small spaces while still being protected.) and concrete bunkers for bomb shelters and sleeping ( the bunker's walls were not as thick as a pillbox's.)The marines would approach in landing craft called Higgins boats and charge the enemy head on. The highest death toll was on "Bloody Omaha" or Omaha beach. this was because the Naval Fire And Aircraft had done very little damage to this area. so, the Marines were met with an unexpected barrage of fire. eventually the marines scaled the massive forts and secured them. This battle was the 1st step to allied victory in the Atlantic.

Hope this helps!
