It is said to have happened 500 years before Columbus came to America (according to the myth). But one could put it this way...
They came form the "east" expanding and growing in what manner they could along the timeframe and places that has been recorded in history. Steadily heading West all the time, and did not at all stay put in Iceland or today's United Kingdom. However there were tribes or parts of tribes that decided to stay on these islands amidst the way to America.
An advanced guessing is that they already landed in America during the first viking crusades, and not during the second when it is said that they discovered it.
