In autumn of 1918, the Central Powers could no longer sustain the war effort, and began dropping out. At the end of September, Bulgaria sought an armistice (an armistice is an agreement to stop fighting so that a peace treaty can be negotiated); in mid October, the Ottoman Empire did the same. Austria-Hungary lost a major battle against Italy, and asked for an armistice (and soon thereafter split into several smaller countries). This left Germany on her own to fight the Allies.

Germany had launched a major offensive in the spring, which failed. The subsequent "Hundred Day" Allied counteroffensive was highly successful, and was on the verge of invading Germany. Germany's navy started a rebellion which spread throughout Germany, forcing the Kaiser to flee. The new government of Germany then requested an armistice. The armistice was signed on November 11th, 1918, in a railway car in Compeigne, France, ending the fighting.

The war officially ended a few months later with the ratification of the various treaties ending the war. Each Central Power country had its own treaty- the most famous being Germany with the Treaty of Versailles. As mentioned, Austria and Hungary had split apart, so Austria ratified the Treaty of Saint-Germain, while Hungary had the Treaty of Trianon.
