hope this helps i have a 97 and replaced the water pump all i had to do was remove the alternator and loosen the Power Steering bracket and the water pump slides out from between the engine and bracket. just done this job on 1998 1.8 turbo. the bolts holding the alternator and power steering brackets pass through the water pump and hold it to the block! mark witch bolt for each hole, they are different lengths. change the thermostat while its off the car..
