Everything you need to know is probably printed on the coin. It should say "1 troy ounce .999 fine silver". Might have an assayer/manufacturer name, but not necessarily. Is worth what your daily paper says the spot silver price is today, minus 10-20% if you are selling to a dealer, or plus about the same if you are buying from a dealer. Of course, it could be gold instead of silver, in which case the buy/sell percentages will be a lot closer to the spot price. If either is an official bullion coin issued by a government (US, Mexico, Canada, China, and South Africa are the only ones I can think of off the top of my head that issue 1-ounce coins) the dealers' buy price may actually be a bit higher than the spot price and the sell price higher yet. There are also "Proof" versions of these official coins that will be priced as numismatic collectibles.

The troy ounceThe troy ounce is heavier than the typical grocery store (avoirdupois) ounce used in the USA. When you purchase a 1 ounce silver or gold coin, you are receiving a "troy" ounce. If you put that same 1 troy oz. coin on a grocery store scale you will find that it weighs about 10% more than the food ounce you are familiar with. It will weigh about 1.1 avoirdupois ounces. About one-third of a troy ounce.
It's not really from 1799. The "one troy ounce" is a giveaway that it's a modern bullion coin, worth slightly more than whatever the current spot price of silver is.
