There is a product called PLUG ALIVE that has a red LED light turn on to indicate your block heater is working immediately. You can also use a meter to measure the resistance or current draw if it is working. It is not as convenience or easy to use the meter all the time especially need to stay outside in the cold temperature. However the block heater element can break or crack at anytime therefore need to check all the time. It's easier to use the PLUG ALIVE tester. Google it to find where you can buy on
