A barrel cactus may be in the Echinocactus or Ferocactus genus. Either way, it's native to the deserts of the United States of America and Mexico. It successfully adapts to the desert environment by its shape and the specialization of its body parts and activities. For example, a barrel cactus finds its rounded body in complete contact with the ground. This makes it easy for its modified leaves in the form of spines to direct any available, precious moisture - be it dew, fog, or rainfall - to the ground. The ground is so close that little is lost to evaporation. The moisture quickly gets below ground, to be taken in by the plant's roots.

Once inside the cactus, the roots send the water and its dissolved nutrients up to the stem. There, water and watery products and solutions are processed and stored. They're exactly where they're needed the most. So little energy, water, and work time is lost in shuttling things back and forth. Everything is where it needs to be.

And once inside the stem, it's difficult for water and watery products and solutions to get out. A barrel cactus has a thickened outer stem that doesn't cooperate with water loss. Additionally, the stem is the location of breathing pores, or stomata. Guard cells on both sides of the stomata's openings monitor what gets out, and what gets in.
