Your "Mac" is usually ready to go straight out of the box. Just plug in the Ethernet cable to the correct input or if you have wifi then your Apple computer will usually automatically detect the network so long as you have a WiFi card installed in your computer.
If you are using WiFi in your home or office and are having trouble with the details of the connection setup, you usually just have to call your internet service provider and they will walk you through the setup process step-by-step while staying incredibly calm and all for free (well... since you paid for the service already it's really the least they can do right).
