To avoid this problem in the future, always fill the gas tank and gas can after each use and keep the gas can off the ground. Inexpensive gas can also be contaminated with water. What usually happens is that warm air enters the fuel can and when the air cools (at night, for instance), the water vapor from the air condenses out in the fuel tank or gas can. This is more of a problem on humid days.
